Cleveland, Ohio – Today, the Committee to Draft Sherrod Brown for President 2020 officially launched in Ohio – a state President Donald Trump carried by 8 points, but reelected Senator Sherrod Brown to a third term last last month by 6 points. Running on a platform of the dignity of work and improved economic opportunities for American workers, Brown defeated one of Trump’s first Congressional endorsers.
“Sherrod developed and executed a blueprint for how Democrats can win back voters that believed that Republicans would address the real problems affecting American families. Sherrod’s message of optimism and belief in the exceptionalism of American workers paves the way to get a real champion for working people in the White House,” said Michael Wager, a Cleveland attorney and educator, who served as the campaign finance chair for Brown’s 2012 reelection.
Brown won seven counties in Ohio that had supported Donald trump in 2016 (specifically, Ashtabula, Erie, Lake, Montgomery, Ottawa, Portage, and Wood Counties) demonstrating the power of his message in rural, exurban, suburban and urban areas of the state.
“Sherrod is a tireless and unapologetic champion for anyone who feels left behind and unheard, which is how he can pull a winning coalition together that includes from young adults drowning in student debt to laid off workers in Lordstown,” said Nan Whaley, mayor of Dayton and leading Democratic strategist in the state. “It’s his respect for and his willingness to fight for the dignity of work that resonates with Ohio voters across the political spectrum and is a winning example of populism without division.”
Wager and Whaley will co-chair The Committee to Draft Sherrod Brown for President 2020, and its work will focus on amplifying news on Brown and his message on economic growth and the dignity of work. This will include community events, as well as digital organizing strategies, across the the country, including the early Democratic Party caucus and primary states.
